Active Shooter Kills Detroit Police Officer & Family Man

DETROIT, MI – A Detroit Police Officer was shot and killed Wednesday evening while responding to a call of a person “who was firing shots indiscriminately.” This is considered an active shooting incident, although police haven’t confirmed whether the suspect was firing shots at people specifically or randomly.

The incident occurred around 7:30pm near Marlowe Street and Joy Road, according to DPD Chief James White, where Officer Loren Courts arrived with his partner approximately two minutes after the 911 call was received.

Chief White said that both officers “immediately took fire from the subject, who was armed with a Draco Assault Rifle.” Officer Courts was shot, while his partner escaped being hit and returned fire on the suspect.

Officer Courts was taken to Sinai-Grace Hospital but unfortunately died from his injuries once he was there.

The suspect also died from his injuries, but his identity has not been released at the time of this writing.

Officer Courts was the son of a recently retired Detroit police officer. He is survived by his wife, Kristine, his nine-year-old daughter, and his 15-year-old son.

Kristine said that she hurried to get to the hospital but Officer Courts had already passed away by the time she got there. She told local news outlets that her best friend was taken from her. She said the two had been in a relationship for 16 years and married for 11.

“I saw the car, but I didn’t see any bullet holes in the car,” she said. “So, it looks like he got out of the car and he immediately got shot in the upper right side or the upper right side of his chest. And yeah, it was just too late. They said he didn’t suffer.

“He’s a great dad, he called my daughter sugar foot. And my son was his best buddy. He was a good husband.”

On social media, Kristine said, “My babies need him. I need him. I keep thinking I’m going to wake up from this nightmare and he’s going to come home.”

Officer Courts was not even supposed to be at work during the shooting, but he volunteered to work a double shift, Kristine said. “He was very, very loyal to DPD,” she continued. “It was his passion. He tried so hard to get in and he finally did; he loved it. He loved being a police officer. But he also loved being a dad. He would tell you that was his greatest accomplishment was being a dad.”

Officer Courts had been with the department for five years.

Chief White said, “The officers are heartbroken. Their soul is crushed. This is the worst day of their life. Dad’s not coming home, a husband is not coming home. It’s unacceptable. It’s absolutely unacceptable.”

According to the Detroit Free Press, “The gun is described as a Romanian variant of the Soviet AK-47 rifle, according to a gun review by Gunivore, an online gun website. The Draco comes with a with a 12.25-inch barrel, instead of the standard 16-inch of its original Soviet counterpart.”
