Animal Rights ‘Darth Vader’ Activist Tackled By Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Champ In The Middle Of The Competition [VIDEO]

NEW YORK CITY, NY – An animal rights activist who decided to storm the stage of the 2022 Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island seemingly got a swift dose of just deserts by one of the contestants who would go on to win the contest after delivering a quick slam to the overzealous activist.
National hot dog eating champion Joey Chestnut has been making the rounds in online chatter following the 4th of July competition in New York City’s Coney Island, but the discourse regarding the competitive eater has little to do with his ability to engorge himself with an unfathomable amount of hot dogs.

While the festivities of the contest were playing out, an animal rights activist wearing a Darth Vader mask and hoisting up a sign that read, “Expose Smithfield Deathstar” rushed the stage and flashed his sign before the camera.
But this protester’s performative exploits were short lived, as after the protesters aggressively bumped into Chestnut to steal the spotlight, the individual was greeted with Chestnut wrapping his arm around their neck and taking them to the ground.
All the while, Chestnut was still chewing on the hot dog.
Despite the unexpected interruption, Chestnut went on to obliterate the competition in the contest – taking down a total of 63 hot dogs in 10 minutes, beating runner up Geoffrey Esper by 15 and a half hot dogs.
There’s obviously much ado about the sign being held up by the Darth Vader mask wearing protester that read “Expose Smithfield Deathstar,” leaving many curious as to what exactly the message was meant to convey.
While not confirmed, a report from Distractify claims that “the general consensus” behind the sign is meant to signal disdain toward Smithfield Foods, which is a Virginia-based food company that processes pork products among other foods.
Among the products produced by Smithfield Foods is Nathan’s hot dogs.
The food company has an entire page dedicated to them on PETA, titled “Smithfield Foods: Cruel to Pigs and Humans,” where the animal rights group asserts, “The way that Smithfield treats pigs, from birth to slaughter, could result in felony cruelty-to-animals charges if pigs were covered by the same laws that are designed to protect dogs and cats from abuse.”
Local reports attributed the organization of protest at the Nathan’s hot dog eating contest to Alicia Santurio of Direct Action Everywhere. Three people were arrested in connection with the stage-storming stunt, and have since been identified as Scott Gilbertson, Robert Yamada, and Josh Marxen.
Santurio of Direct Action Everywhere has had her hand (quite literally) in other similar stunts, having glued her hand to the basketball court of a Minnesota Timberwolves’ home game this past April during the game’s second quarter. She was later issued a trespass notice after security ripped her glued hand off the court.
