For most of the twentieth century, IQ scores steadily went up in the U.S. and in other countries around the world. People were getting better nutrition, there were fewer contaminants like lead in gasoline, and people were cured of parasites that were ruining their health. So, no surprise, people got smarter.
But a few decades ago, that trend started to reverse. Now, not only are we getting fatter and less healthy, but people are getting dumber again. It’s happening in almost every country: Norway, Estonia, Finland, Denmark, the UK, and of course, here in the United States. It’s not just some kind of “idiocracy effect,” where dumb people have more kids than smart people. Because apparently, even within specific families, children are turning out a little bit dumber than their parents on average, and their children are turning out even dumber…well, the children they actually have, since a lot of people this generation are just declaring themselves transgender and then sterilizing themselves.
So what’s causing this decline? It’s not hard to find possible culprits: Plastics in literally everything. Poison in our food. More and more mandatory vaccines. So, what can we do individually? Well, whatever our personal genetic inheritance, each of us should do whatever we can to maximize our potential. That’s where nootropics can come in.
